St. Louis was at one time the third largest rail hub in the United States. Many railroads ran through the town, capitalizing on the nearby Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Missouri Pacific, Frisco, Wabash, Chicago & Alton and Missouri-Kansas-Texas were the main lines that ran into the city. Today, a vast majority are still in existence; despite the diminished importance of Saint Louis as a rail hub.
Presently, the BNSF and Union Pacific are the major freight haulers in St. Louis, with the Metrolink providing a lightrail service.
